I chose to visit Croatia for the first time in May 2005 and decided that, as I was traveling on my own (something that I was not used to), that it would be better to go on an organized tour. After researching different tour groups, I chose seecroatia.net as the tour groups were small and the cost affordable.
A little dubious at the start not knowing anyone else, I was pleasantly surprised how friendly everyone was, so it did not take long to feel part of the small group. Our fearless leaders, Johnny, Stephen and Daniela, had organized the sightseeing activities each day to show us the highlights of the beautiful Adriatic coast. With Johnny & Daniela being Croatian, they knew where to take us, spoke the language and were able to sort out any problems as they occurred. Stephen, being an Aussie who has fallen in love with Croatia, spoke passionately about the places we visited, but was also able to understand what we Australian tourists wanted to see etc.
Being in a small group of nine we did not feel we were invading each town visited as one would on a huge coach. We were also able to discuss between ourselves any changes we wanted to make to the itinerary so things were very flexible. Staying in a small pension, being able to shop at local shops and markets one was able to get a much better feel for the country, rather than staying with a large group in a large impersonal hotel where one always feels a tourist!
Highlights of my trip were probably Dubrovnik and Korcula. Dubrovnik, situated on the south western coast, meant a long drive but this incredible walled city certainly was impressive and worth the drive. I also enjoyed the island of Korcula with its pebbled beaches and clear blue water. Each place we visited gave us an understanding of Croatia and its people. We had a guided tour in most spots we visited so that a local could explain the history and sights. Each day lunch at a local restaurant was organized and these were always friendly occasions where we enjoyed local specialties and chatted about what we had seen.
All in all I would thoroughly recommend seecroatia.net if you would like to see the wonderful sights that Croatia has to offer. The small tour groups, led by people who know the country, make it a hassle-free way to see this most beautiful destination.
