Day 1: Zagreb
Arrival into Zagreb airport in the early morning or afternoon, with guided late afternoon tour of Zagreb. Afterwards we will have dinner.
Day 2: Varaždin, Trakošćan
All day sightseeing in Varaždin and Trakošćan, includes lunch and entrance into both castles. Varaždin is a rich and well preserved city with medieval defensive buildings, rounded towers and many baroque and rococo palaces and houses. Trakošćan castle dates back to the 13th century. It has been meticulously maintained and sits above a fairytale lake.
Day 3: Ljubljana and Lake Bled, Slovenia
Transfer to Lake Bled, with lunch in Ljubljana – Slovenia’s capital – and entrance into the castle.
Day 4: Lake Bled
All day sightseeing at beautiful Lake Bled, including a gondola to the island in the centre of this picturesque glacial lake, a visit to the castle and lunch in Bled.
Day 5: Postojna Caves & Predjama Castle, Rovinj
A trip into Europe’s most visited caves at Postojna, plus lunch and tour of nearby Predjama Castle, a Renaissance castle built within a cave mouth. Late afternoon we arrive in Rovinj, a thousand year old town surrounded by water with splendid Baroque church and narrow streets.
Day 6: Pula, Brijuni Islands, Fažana
Today we will visit the magnificent 1st century amphitheater in Pula before exploring the Brijuni Islands, famous for their scenic beauty and a Croatian National Park, with lunch in Fažana, a small port and fishermen’s centre.
Day 7: Venice, Italy
Today you will catch a fast ferry across the Adriatic to Italy for the day. You will have about 5 hours in Venice to explore this magical city.
Day 8: Porec, Lim fjord
Day trip to Porec and Lim fjord, includes lunch. Porec is a two thousand year old harbourside town with the 6th century Byzantine Basilica of Euphrasius, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Lim fjord is a beautiful and protected bay. The movie The Vikings starring Kirk Douglas was shot here in 1958.
Day 9: Rastoke Slunj
Transfer to Rastoke Slunj near the Plitvice Lakes National Park, with lunch at a traditional restaurant.
Day 10: Plitvice Lakes
All day sightseeing in the National Park, including entrance and lunch. The World Heritage-listed Plitvice Lakes are the most beautiful in Croatia and perhaps all Europe. I will guide you around the national park which takes about 4 hours at an easy walk.
Day 11: Zadar, Šibenik, Split
Lunch and sightseeing in Zadar, a beautiful port with many churches and historic building, followed by a visit to the Cathedral of St James in Šibenik, Croatia’s most renowned church. Transfer to Split airport around 3pm for those finishing the 11 day tour and those starting the 8 day tour. Dinner in Split.
Day 12: Krka National Park, Trogir, Solin, Split
A full day’s sightseeing – from the famous Krka waterfalls to the UNESCO World Heritage port of Trogir with its many palaces, churches and towers, including the famous 13th century cathedral featuring the newly opened and renovated Romanesque Portal of Radovan. Solin is the ancient Roman city of Salona. We finish the day with an evening walking tour of Split with guide, visiting the Diocletian’s Palace and Old Town.
Day 13: Hvar
This popular Adriatic island’s scenic beauty is complemented by its architectural heritage. We will visit the monastery, old town centre, 400 year old theatre and fortress.
Day 14: Omiš, Ston, Korcula
Omiš was once a Corsairs’ port, protected by the mountainous massif that rises from behind the town and fortress. Ston has the longest city walls in the world after the Great Wall of China! After lunch we continue onwards to Korcula, with an early evening tour of this the best preserved medieval town in Croatia and dinner in a traditional local restaurant.
Day 15: Korcula
We will explore Korcula with lunch in seafood restaurant enjoying gourmet cuisine and local wines, then drive to all the major settlements on the island.
Day 16: Dubrovnik
Transfer to Dubrovnik, with afternoon free to relax by the sea near our waterfront apartments.
Day 17: Dubrovnik
All day sightseeing in Dubrovnik, the Prince of the Adriatic and the jewel in Croatia’s crown. Includes city walls walk and guided tour of the historic centre with local guide. We will have lunch in the Old Town.
Day 18: Dubrovnik
Transfers to Airport Dubrovnik.
